Huntsville, AL Results

Wow, what a great weekend. It was great to be back in Huntsville Alabama at the famous Whistle Stop Festival, benfiting the Earlyworks of Huntsville. The weather turned out to be great, the parking was excellent, (had our own little fenced in area). We had a good cook, we were happy with all our meats we cooked, and we had excellent scores, just not winning scores which is testament to good judging. We finished 6th overall, with a 10th Springer Mountain Farm Chicken, 21st & 11th Compart Duroc Ribs and Pork respectivley. Our best effort of the day was 3rd place with our Strube Ranch Brisket…(and as always Trust your Butcher). Also, a Big Congrats to David with Butcher’s BBQ on RGC in Bixby, OK this weekend, and to Donnie and Cindy with Buffalo’s BBQ on the GC. We are heading to Brandon, MS next weekend. Until next week.

Rogers, AR

Another great weekend in Rogers, AR. Weather was perfect, and the event was great. We ended up 3rd overall out of 34 teams. Had 6th chicken, 1st Rib, 6th pork and 11th brisket. Only one point out of RGC and 3 out of GC, but the top two teams are Lotta Bull “U” alumni. Congrats to Caveman Cuisine on GC and to Little Pig Town on RGC. We are headed to Delight to see the folks and load up product on our way to Decatur, AL to do a Backyard Class on Tuesday night, before we head over to Huntsville, AL to compete next weekend. RGC Enid, Oklahoma

Wow, what a weekend. It turned off pretty cold on Friday, but Saturday turned into a great day with plenty of sunshine. Turn-in went off without a hitch, and we were happy, for the most part, with what we turned in. Chicken and Ribs were dryer than what we wanted, but it was all we had. Flavor wise we were on point. Anyways, we ended up 17th chicken, 20th Rib, 10th Pork, and 6th Brisket. We were just hoping that we finished in the top ten. Well, we pulled off a Reserve Grand Champion. What a shock. We’ll take it any day of the week, but the RGC and the GC were both shocks. The GC only had one top ten call in the categories.

We headed home to enjoy the grandsons coming to the house today. Can’t wait. A congrats to David with Butcher’s BBQ
and to Darian with Kosmo’s Q for there calls as well. We will be heading to Rogers, AR for the upcoming weekend, and then head on over to AL.

Stillwater, OK Grand Champion

What a weekend. We finally have our first GC for the 2012 Season. We competed at the Elks Lodge in Stillwater, OK this weekend against 49 competitors. At the end of the day we were announced GC. We placed 11th Chicken, 2nd Rib, 4th Pork and 4th Brisket. Congrats to Little Pig Town out of Owasso, OK on RGC. Proceeds from this event goes to the Judith Karman Hospice. It’s always great to compete at a contest that has such a worthy cause. Be sure to put this event on your calendar for 2013. The Elks Lodge and event staff do a great job. We are headed to Enid, OK for our next event.

2012 BBQ Contest Update

Wow, what a beginning. We started out in Great Bend, KS at the end of February. The wind was blowing so hard, Mike had to man the door. It took all he had to get it open and shut. Didn’t fair too well with the Judges, but what do they know. LOL Headed from there to Cookeville, TN to update our Sponsors on the RV. After 2 breakdowns we finally made it on Wednesday. Spent the day there, and headed out towards Atmore, AL after waiting on the Tornado sirens to quit blowing. On Wednesday night we had another breakdown about 80 miles from Atmore. Pulled into a Rest Area and spent the night. John Swift of Wild Bunch Butt Burners sent a man with the part we needed on Thursday morning, and we finally made it to their home in Atmore Thursday afternoon. Shortly after arriving there, we all headed to Pensacola, FL. Had a fair showing there, then headed back to Atmore to spend the week with the Swift’s and several other teams. Great time to socialize and eat great food. We all headed different directions on Thursday afternoon. We headed to Baton Rouge, LA to the Sam’s Club event. We received one call, but enjoyed our time with Mike and Chris Peters of Here Piggy Piggy. We headed back to Atmore before heading to Tupelo, MS for the Don’t Be Cruel contest on Thursday. Never have been escorted into an event, but the Tupelo Police escorted each team to their parking spot. They stopped traffic and paraded us through Tupelo. Upon arrival all the event folks were wearing Elvis sunglasses. We got some too. Mike really looks cute in his Elvis wear. We received a call there as well, and headed back to Atmore, AL one more time so we could help John and Kathy with an annual charity event for Relay for Life. John and Mike cooked 246 steaks for this event. We headed out Tuesday headed to Hammond, LA. Stopped along the way in Long Beach, MS for a quick haircut for Debbie from her favorite hairdresser, Janet Welch. It was great to see Terry and Janet, and we also got to eat at Little Rays, which is our favorite restaurant there. We’ve been eating Poor Boy’s galore on this trip. Headed out Tuesday afternoon to Hammond and parked behind City Glass which Eric Phares and his lovely wife own and run. We had torrential ran for a couple of days, but was glad when it moved out. Moved over to the cookoff site on Thursday morning, and just enjoyed sitting out and visiting with everyone. We finish this BBQ tour with a 5th place overall. We received 5th Chicken and 3rd Rib. We are ending this outing and headed home, with a quick trip to our daughters home to see her and the grandsons. Flying to Vegas next weekend, then we are going to spend the month of April in Oklahoma for some close cookoffs. Be sure and mark your calendars for next year when Hammond, LA will be celebrating their 10th year holding their event.
